The Poison DuPont Hid in Your Kitchen (And Your Blood)

Alright folks, buckle up. You’ve heard of nonstick pans, right? Waterproof jackets? Stain-proof carpets? Cute. Now let me tell you the dirty little secret behind all of them.

Back in the 1930s, chemical giant DuPont set out to make a safer fridge gas. But what they found instead was something else: a “miracle powder” that didn’t burn, didn’t melt, and didn’t break down. Sound familiar? It should.

They called it Teflon. 🧪

It helped build nukes in WWII during the Manhattan Project (Source: National Geographic), and after the war? It ended up on your eggs and your clothes. But here’s the kicker: to make Teflon, they used a nasty little devil called C8—also known as PFOA.

C8 doesn’t go away. Not in air. Not in water. Not in YOU.

It builds up in your blood. In your kids. In animals. In polar bears. 🐻‍❄️ Yeah, even THEY got dosed. (Source: CDC)

In the 1990s, a West Virginia farmer named Earl Tennant saw his cows dropping dead with tumors, black teeth, and hairless hooves. His water was foaming—bubbling from a nearby DuPont landfill. He hired environmental lawyer Rob Bilott, and that lawsuit cracked the toxic shell wide open. (Source: The New York Times)

In 2005, after years of legal battles, a scientific panel confirmed the link between C8 and:

  • Thyroid disease
  • Testicular and kidney cancer
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • And more

DuPont settled for $107.6 million... but then pulled a fast one. They spun off their Teflon division into a new company—Chemours—and kept on cookin’. (Source: C&EN)

Next came a chemical cousin called GenX, meant to replace C8. But surprise—GenX causes many of the same diseases and spreads even faster. (Source: EPA)

Today, the class of chemicals used in Teflon are known as PFASPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances – or more ominously: Forever Chemicals.

Why “forever”? Because they don’t break down. They build up in your bloodstream, organs, and the environment. In fact, 97–99% of humans tested in the U.S. have PFAS in their blood. (Source: EWG)

They’ve been found in:

  • Breastmilk
  • Rainwater
  • Soil
  • Drinking water
  • Polar bears
  • YOU

How do PFAS harm us? They mimic fatty acids, sneak into your blood, and embed themselves in your organs. There’s no easy way to remove them.

So what can you do?

  • ❌ Skip nonstick pans, waterproof clothes, and stain-resistant furniture
  • ❌ Ditch microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes, and fast food wrappers
  • ✅ Drink filtered water—reverse osmosis (RO), activated carbon, or ion exchange
  • ✅ Spread the word. Because this cover-up is still happening.

DuPont’s “miracle” made them billions. But it came at a cost we’ll be paying for generations.
